Sammy Basso Gets His Wish at Holy Angels Church To Experience A Gospel Mass Celebration
By Mr. Tyrone Pittman - Director of Music
On Sunday, September 14, 2014, at 11:30 a.m., the National Geographic Reporters brought Sammy Basso to Holy Angels Catholic Church to fulfill his wish to experience the celebration of a Gospel Mass. Sammy is 18 years old. He suffers from a rare aging disease call progeria. He was born in Italy. Sammy speaks his native language, Italian, and English as a second language.
Sammy also had a desire to sing with a gospel choir. He had the pleasure of singing a leading part in a song entitled “We Sing Praise to Our King” with The Holy Angels Eucharistic Ensemble, along with some members of the Chicago Black Catholics Choir, under the direction of Mr. Tyrone Pittman on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
Sammy moved the church to tears and shouts of joy with his exuberant gestures as he rocked from side to side singing a leading part in a gospel song that he learned the day before the Mass that he would attend at Holy Angels Church.
Sammy has a great outlook on life. His prophetic message to all peo- ple is, “Don’t waste your life.” He suggests that everyone should learn how to live life well. His example gives the village of Holy Angels much to graze upon. Truly, Sammy’s presence was ordained by God to bless the village of Holy Angels. When Sammy was asked about his experience at Holy Angels’ Gospel Mass, he stated that he enjoyed hearing the congregation say, “Amen,” while the Homily was being delivered by Fr. Andrew Smith, pastor of Holy Angels Church, and the excitement from the congregation when the choir would sing.
Sammy’s family, along with the National Geographic Reporters, expressed their appreciation of the Gospel Mass at Holy Angels Church. One of the reporters said that he was moved to tears, and the last time that he was moved to tears was during a “Star Wars” movie. The reporters were so appreciative for all that they had experienced during the Gospel Mass at Holy Angels Church.
Assuredly, God was manifested at this Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross at Holy Angels Catholic Church.
We offer special thanks to Mr. Gregory Callaway who posts Holy Angels’ Sunday Mass on YouTube each week. Mr. Callaway was moved by God to follow through on Sammy’s request to make his wish a reality. Many thanks to Mr. Callaway for allowing God to minister through him!
The Holy Angels Church Family offers thanks to Fr. Andrew Smith for the opportunity to host this most blessed event at Holy Angels Church.
